Thank you so much! For reference, it was not properly encoded. When I made it a Linear PCM/.wav file it works perfectly on the device. The simulator obviously lets you get away with incorrect file formats.

The code I used above was taken directly from Match for Kids and it works normally. Without code I can only guess as to the problem, but my best guess is that the sound file you are using is invalid (i.e. not encoded properly) or is more than 30 seconds long.

See if your sound file follows these rules: <a href="http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/NetworkingInternet/Conceptual/RemoteNotificationsPG/IPhoneOSClientImp/IPhoneOSClientImp.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40008194-CH103" rel="nofollow">IOS Docs: Scheduling, Registering, and Handling Notifications</a>

Hope this helps.

This works for me on the simulator but not on the device (iOS4). The alert box 'Exited!' shows up, but the sound doesn't play (both work on the simulator).

Is this likely to be because it is taking too long to call it, or could it be something else?

Thanks in advance

Yes. If you set the alertBody to nil, then it will only play the sound.

An updated example from above would be:
UIApplication* app = [UIApplication sharedApplication];

// Create a new notification
UILocalNotification* alarm = [[[NSClassFromString(@"UILocalNotification") alloc] init] autorelease];
if (alarm)
{
     alarm.fireDate = nil;
     alarm.repeatInterval = 0;
     alarm.soundName = @"ExitSound2.wav";

     alarm.alertBody = nil; //Change this to nil and only the sound will play.

     alarm.hasAction=NO;

    [app presentLocalNotificationNow:alarm]; //This schedules the notification to happen ASAP
}
This is great stuff! Is there any way to play the sound in iOS4 without showing the alert?
